Kefalonia
Kefalonia
is the largest of the Ionian islands (see map at foot of page),
and boasts the third largest mountain range in Greece. With
spectacular scenery, magnificent beaches and clear blue water,
this beautiful island was once voted 10th in the world scenic
beauty league.
Kefalonia is a national park and home to wild ponies, golden
eagles, ospreys and other protected species, whilst the marine
wildlife includes dolphins, rare monk seals and the loggerhead
turtle.
Combining the above with excellent restaurants, tavernas and
VillaTina, you have the perfect destination for those who
enjoy scenic beauty, good food and relaxation.

Kefalonian
Highlights
| Having
the benefit of your car, you are able to explore this beautiful
island at your leisure and visit many of the interesting sights
or relax on any of the magnificent beaches. Below are a few
of these Kefalonian highlights. |
Argostoli
Argostoli is an attractive town with a very cosmopolitan feel
to it, with numerous cafes, restaurants and bistros situated
in the main square, pedestrianised streets and along the waterfront.
|
 |
|
Buy your fresh fish from the fishermen on the quayside and then
visit the colourful Fruit and Vegetable Market. Argostoli is
also the home to two interesting local museums. |
 |
Drogarati
Caves
A series of illuminated cave sections leading to a stunning
cathedral-like central chamber. As well as an impressive array
of illuminated stalactites and stalagmites, the chamber has
extraordinary acoustics and is occasionally used for musical
performances, with Maria Callas having performed there in the
past. |
Melisani
Cave
Dating back over 30,000 years and with stalactites that have
been dated around 20,000 years, the Melissani cave has an underground
lake with light, provided via a hole in the roof, that turns
the water a brilliant turquoise. Boatmen take you out to appreciate
nature's beautiful creation. |
 |
 |
Fiskardo
Situated in the north of Kefalonia is Fiskardo, a small fishing
port built around a horseshoe bay and lined with picturesque
old houses, most of them Greek bars, restaurants and boutiques.
Kaikia and yachts moor at the quay and day or night, the scene
is picture-postcard pretty. |
Ithaca
Odysseus's legendary homeland, this island just off the north
east coast of Kefalonia is the least spoilt of all the major
Ionian islands, with few signs of commercialism. A lovely day
out enjoying nature's beauty with ferries running daily from
Sami and Fiskardo. |
 |
 |
Myrtos
Beach
From the cliffs above it, Myrtos Beach appears as a dazzling
crescent of white shingle next to a turquoise sea and is one
of the most photographed beaches in Greece. |
Mount
Ainos
At 1,628 m Mount Enos is a vast hogback mountain that dominates
the south of the island and is one of the highest mountains
in western Greece. It has been declared a National Park, more
to protect the wildlife than attract visitors, and is home to
wild horses as well as falcons, eagles and other raptors. The
views are the best in the entire Ionian, reaching as far north
as Corfu, across to the Pelopennese and to nearby Zakynthos,
Ithaka and Lefkada. |
 |
 |
Assos
Assos is probably the most atmospheric village on the island
and stands on the rock of a small peninsular. Above Assos lies
the ruin of a Venetian fortress reached by a zigzag trail through
woodland and terraces. |
Kefalonia's
Beaches
Good beaches are never far away on Kefalonia and there are plenty
to suit every mood, from those around Lassi and Poros, providing
a multitude of water sports, to Petani and Antisamos in quiet
settings to those in between such as Lourdas and Skala to name
only a few. |
